How to rename lots of files at once (no coding)
Renaming files one by one is slow, and batch-rename tools make you learn patterns and settings first. With MatrixX you describe the names you want in a sentence, and it renames the files for you.
It tells you what it renamed, so you can check the result or ask for changes.
Download MatrixX free Try it on the websiteHow to do it
- Install MatrixX and create a free account
Windows 10 and 11, or Mac with an Apple chip (beta).
- Describe the new names
For example: "In my Holiday folder, rename the photos to Greece-2026-001, Greece-2026-002 and so on."
- Check the list
MatrixX shows which files it renamed. Ask it to change anything you don't like.
Things you can ask
- “Rename the photos in my Holiday folder to Greece-2026-001, -002 and so on”
- “Rename the screenshots in Downloads so their names start with the date”
- “Remove "copy of" from every file name in this folder”
- “Rename my lecture PDFs to Lecture 1, Lecture 2... in date order”
Questions
Can it undo a rename?
Ask it to rename the files back. It knows what it changed in the same chat.
Does it change the files themselves?
No, renaming only changes the names, not what's inside.
Is it free?
Yes, the free plan has 25 messages a day.
Just want clean names to copy? Try the free file name cleaner (it makes the names; MatrixX renames the real files).
